Production
Early reports at the time of D23 Expo 2011 indicated that Michael Arndt was working on the script.[28] In April 2014, Arndt explained that he left the project in 2011.[29] The last film credits Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley for writing.[thirty]
Pixar offset revealed the following information on the upcoming film at D23 Expo 2011: "From managing director Pete Docter comes an inventive new picture show that explores a world that everyone knows, only no ane has seen: within the man mind."[31]
In an interview with Charlie Rose in early December 2011, John Lasseter revealed the film takes place in a girl'south mind, and is nearly her emotions as characters. In June 2012, he made a similar argument to Bleeding Absurd, and gave farther details:
" | Pete [Docter] has this fashion of constantly trying to figure out something that nosotros're all familiar with in some way… he'southward constantly looking for these kinds of things. You expect at people ofttimes and they do something to brand yous get "What are they thinking?" or it'south like how a song gets stuck in your head and you just can't get it out. Little quirky thing similar this that nosotros all do. Certain emotions but seem to take united states of america over, acrimony or happiness, where you beginning giggling and laughing and you lot can't finish. He thought "I want to take a look at that, explicate that." His idea is that the emotions of this little girl are the characters and it takes place in the head of this trivial girl, and shows how they control things that go on. It's very, very clever and information technology'southward truly unlike anything y'all've ever seen, yet it explains things you've seen. | " |
Docter said to have first pitched this project'south idea in June 2009 and to have started work on it in 2009.[32] [33]
Inspiration
Docter said that when thinking about his next project following Up, one of his goals was to make a film that would be new and innovative blitheness-wise, while keeping with some of his previous themes.[34] [35]
Docter took inspiration from the personal experience of watching his daughter Elie as she grew up into adolescence. Information technology was moving for him, as she seemed to take lost her childhood joy and became more withdrawn.[36] The motion picture stemmed from his reflection on these events, from his perspective as a parent and adult, and on his ain feel of change. He said:[36]
" | I thought I was making a film about my daughter, but the truth is, I'm more making a moving-picture show almost myself in relation to my daughter and agreement that. The motion-picture show is told from a parent's point of view, and existence a parent, I but sort of slipped into that, I guess. Information technology's definitely made me think again most the way I grew upwardly, my adolescence, and even on a day-to-twenty-four hour period basis what I'grand doing and why. | " |
In their inquiry, the team consulted psychologists and read scientific theories regarding the workings of the listen. The film's blueprint was influenced by what they learned, such every bit the thought that memories are sent to long term memory during sleep.[35] [37] Much of their work was to simplify complex ideas to get a uncomplicated and comprehensible concept.[36] [37] Nevertheless, Docter says they are "approaching it from a poetic viewpoint. It's not even trying to be scientific at all."[36]
At one point, to fit with some scientific theories, the team considered having 27 emotion characters, but they found this to be also circuitous.[32] [38] The set of emotions in the final pic is based on the vi universal emotions every bit identified in works past Paul Ekman, with Surprise being omitted.[39] [twoscore] The five emotions also represent with the eight basic emotions defined by Robert Plutchik'southward theory, with Trust, Surprise and Anticipation missing.[36] Docter said he would consider Surprise to be the main emotion missing, but felt information technology was somewhat redundant with their Fearfulness character.[32] Other emotions which were considered merely not used include Pride and Trust.[32] [forty]
Design
At the 2013 Siggraph convention, Pete Docter said the story was "one of the nigh challenging I've ever had to put together", because the picture show has to tell simultaneously what is happening to Riley and what is happening inside her mind.[41]
Docter has insisted the film's setting is independent from the biological, physical reality of the brain, and that it is rather set up in the mind, with a more than metaphysical, abstract viewpoint.[42]
Emotions, because of their nature, were made as potent, highly caricatured and distinctive characters, in a mode Docter compared to the seven dwarfs from Disney'south Snowfall White and the Vii Dwarfs.[34] [37] Co-ordinate to Docter, each emotion is based on a basic shape: Sadness on a teardrop, Joy on a star, Fright on a raw nerve, Anger on a burn brick and Disgust on a broccoli.[38]
Continuing with the idea the listen is independent from reality, and in an endeavour to have emotions look the mode one would feel them, emotions are not made of mankind and blood. As Docter says: "They are made up of particles that actually motion. Instead of being pare and solid, information technology is a massive drove of energy."[41] Similarly, to animate them the team took a style with more stretching and exaggeration of movements than is usual for Pixar, closer to classic cartoon animation.[34] Inspiration was taken from Chuck Jones and Tex Avery, as well as Milt Kahl and John Sibley.[37]
Regarding how the genders of the emotions were chosen, the process was intuitive, co-ordinate to Docter; he felt Anger was more masculine, while Sadness was more feminine. Casting was besides an influence, notably for Disgust with Mindy Kaling. The main characters were made female too to reflect their location inside a girl'due south mind. Regarding the emotions of Riley's parents, he said: "We skewed them all male and all female person for a quick read, because you take to empathize where nosotros are, which is a little phony just hopefully people don't mind!"[32]
About the general blueprint of Riley's mind, Docter said: "Jonas [Rivera] likes to joke that it looks like an Apple store meets It's A Pocket-sized World. Nosotros wanted it to reflect what I recollect an eleven-yr-old girl would exist interested in without being overly cutesy about it or clichéd. We cast a wide net and this is where nosotros ended up."[32]
